From Jokes to Epic Stories

Set in Rotterdam, the story follows a group of friends on their missions through the city in hopes of saving it from the supervillain “Dr.J”. The movie is defined by its visual style rooted in the 90s video game era, giving it a zany and parodic characteristic. On a meta level, the movie is both a love letter to and a rant about Hollywood blockbusters, featuring a constant exchange between epic, action-filled moments and ridiculous, stereotypical "over-the-top" story elements. The movie evolves through different stages of genres, closely tied to locations and culture within Rotterdam, finding its climax at the heart of the city in a big showdown. The Faka Bros is a tribute to Rotterdam and my time spent there, an interpretation of the city's pulse and personality. Like a typical night out with my friend group, it feels as if our conversations and stories come to life in the movie's version of Rotterdam. Every scene draws from our inside stories, from sharing a Kapsalon to surviving a wild ride to Delft.

Faka Bros - the movie

Saving the World: Because Art Students Said so

The “Faka Bros” is a metaphor for our collective experience in Rotterdam and the Art Academy, for the people and events that have influenced our path. All members of our friend group are or have been part of the journey within the academy. We met each other here, work together here and share the same struggles. Somewhere in between wanting to create impactful work and doubting whether our projects will ever be relevant outside the 4 walls of the academy we find ourselves battling through our bachelor’s programme. At times it feels as if we have to beat the academy rather than get supported by it. This movie explores our journey, capturing that relentless drive art students have—to believe that their work could save the world—while poking fun at the irony: maybe, just this once, art students will succeed.
